When asked what the first release by the Flaming Lips in three years sounded like, Wayne Coyne filled the typical “____ meets ____” answer with Miles Davis and Joy Division. The odd part about it is it actually sounds like that. I’ve been somewhat let down by the Lips turn into MOR rock with their past few releases, but this is a complete 180 degree turn from self-help lyrics and synth strings, opting for a sound almost ripped from Radiohead’s throwaway track from Amnesiac, “Hunting Bears”. Mixed with the lo-fi guitar tones of that track, the album seems to drift from a 1969 jazz fusion freak out (Read Live/Evil not Weather Report) and a 1979 post-punk dirge, with atonal basslines and wiry guitars fighting back and forth with alien keyboards and droning synths. This is the kind of record the Flaming Lips should be making.
